Justin Schell is the Director of the Shapiro Design Lab, an ever-evolving peer learning community at the University of Michigan Library. He is a member of EDGI, the Environmental Data & Governance Initiative and active in a variety of citizen and community science projects. Before moving to Michigan, he was a filmmaker and Council on Library and Information Resources post-doctoral fellow at the University of Minnesota Library. Outside of his library work, he has directed We Rock Long Distance, a feature-length documentary film that weaves together the stories of three Minnesota hip-hop musicians with roots far beyond the Land of 10,000 Lakes. In addition, he founded the Minnesota Hip-Hop Collection, an archive dedicated to the history of hip-hop in Minnesota, housed at the University of Minnesota Library.
