Opening Keynote: Risk and Reward: public interest and the public good at the intersection of law, tech, and libraries
Nancy Sims, University of Minnesota
The library world tends to be a bit risk- and conflict-avoidant – often for pretty good reasons related to our public interest values! The non-libraries tech world tends to be more cavalier about risk, and embrace confrontation, in ways that create both benefits and harms for many people. Nancy will offer some thoughts through the lenses of her legal and tech background, in how libraries need to take savvy risks and engage in strategic confrontation to forward our public interest values and reduce harms to our users and our communities in a time of increasing instability.
