What Does Faculty Use of Academic Social Networking Sites Mean for the Institutional Repository?

Faculty have embraced academic social networking sites (ASNS), such as Academia.edu and ResearchGate, in order to share and access scholarship. Yet their participation with the institutional repository (IR) is often low or nonexistent. What are the connections between these two arenas of scholarly communication, and how does engagement with one influence the other? Analyzing two distinct institutional settings — one mid-sized state university and one small private college — this session will compare quantitative data of faculty use of ASNS with their use of the IR, highlight disciplinary differences, and share qualitative data from faculty about the motivations behind their choices.
