A Comparative Usability Study of Discovery Search Interfaces
This session will discuss an exploratory usability study of three academic library discovery systems. The study followed the classic “think aloud” protocol. Participants were given scenarios to complete that involved finding information using the libraries’ website. Mouse movements and audio were recorded. Participants were then asked to perform the same searches on two peer libraries’ sites. The sites that were chosen as comparatives had differences both in the search box and particularly in search result display. The participants were then asked to share likes and dislikes about each system. This study yielded valuable insights into search design and results display.
